Denise Tryon is Professor of Horn at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music and, since 2019, fourth horn of the American Horn Quartet. In 2026, Tryon was a member of the World Horn Summit in Japan. She previously served as fourth horn of The Philadelphia Orchestra and held positions with the Detroit, Baltimore, Columbus, and
New World Symphonies. Tryon was Professor of Horn at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (2018–2023) and taught at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore (2007–2019).
A graduate of Interlochen Arts Academy (1989), Tryon earned her Bachelor of Music from the New England Conservatory in 1993. While in NEC’s Artist Diploma Program with the Taiyo Wind Quintet, the ensemble won the Coleman Chamber Competition and collaborated with composers including John Harbison, Luciano Berio, and György Ligeti.
An active educator and clinician, Tryon gives masterclasses across the United States, Scandinavia, Europe, Asia, and South America. She has been a featured artist at numerous International Horn Society symposiums and regional workshops, as well as events such as Nordic Hornfest, Rafael Mendez Brass Institute, and Orford Winds.
Tryon’s recording projects include her 2015 solo debut SO•LOW, which commissioned four works for low horn and piano; Gramophone praised her “sonorous fluidity and dexterity.” The American Prize awarded her a Special Judges Citation for “Important Commitment to the Music of Our Time.” Her 2017 duo album A Pair of Aces with Karl
Pituch won a Silver Medal in the Global Music Awards. Her second solo album, Hope Springs Eternal (2020), featuring six commissioned works for low horn, was named Winner for Instrumental Performance by The American Prize in 2022.
Tryon’s latest recording Borrowed Bach, Bach Cello Suite I - V, Transcribed by Denise Tryon released in October of 2026. The sheet music of these transcriptions of the suites released at the same time.
She recently released an edited and expanded edition of Josef Schantl’s Grand Theoretical and Practical Method for the Valve Horn.
