Biography
Simin Ganatra is professor of music in violin and chair of the Strings Department at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. She is also first violinist of the Pacifica Quartet, the school’s quartet-in-residence.
A multiple-Grammy Award-winning violinist, The Strad has called her an “excellent and unique violinist,” while the St. Paul Pioneer Press praised her “miraculous sense of flow and otherworldly beauty.”
As first violinist of the acclaimed Pacifica Quartet, Ganatra has performed at renowned venues including Carnegie Hall, Wigmore Hall, the Kennedy Center, and Alice Tully Hall, earning critical acclaim for her artistry and musical leadership. The New York Times has described the quartet’s performances as “nothing short of phenomenal.”
Ganatra’s repertoire spans the great string quartet literature, landmark works of Beethoven and Shostakovich, and numerous contemporary commissions. She collaborated with legendary pianist Menahem Pressler in performances and recordings, bringing together generations of chamber music excellence.
Beyond the quartet stage, Ganatra has appeared as a soloist across North America and abroad and has collaborated with many of today’s leading artists, including Anthony McGill and Yo Yo Ma. The Washington Post has called her a “particular standout,” noting her compelling presence and expressive leadership. The Seattle Post-Intelligencer praised her playing, writing that “Ganatra’s sound needs mentioning for its sheer beauty throughout,” comparing its effect to “the Aurora Borealis in a star-filled sky.” Critics have consistently highlighted her clarity of line, tonal warmth, and interpretive voice, qualities that shine in both solo and chamber performances.
Deeply committed to teaching, Ganatra’s students have extensive solo and chamber music careers, professorships, and orchestra positions around the world. She has served on the faculty of many music festivals worldwide, including the Aspen Music Festival, where she was codirector of the Center for Advanced Quartet Studies, and is frequently asked to adjudicate major competitions around the world, including the Concours Musical International de Montréal–Violin 2026, Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competition, Stulberg Competition, Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition, and Fischoff Competition.
