Biography
Lissa Fleming May is professor of music in music education and interim chair of the Guitar Department at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, where she teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in music education and supervises student teachers.
May served as the Jacobs School’s associate dean for instruction from 2015 to 2023 and as director of undergraduate studies from 2013 to 2015.
While serving as supervisor of fine arts for the Waterford School District, she also directed the Oakland University (Michigan) jazz ensemble. As a former faculty member in band and jazz studies at Purdue University, she founded the Purdue Jazz Festival and directed the Purdue Jazz Band on a tour of Japan and China.
May has appeared as a clinician and guest conductor in 15 U.S. states, Australia, Brazil, and China. Her publications include the books Getting Started with Jazz and A Guide to Student Teaching in Band, several book chapters, compositions for band and jazz ensemble, and music education research.
